So there it was.
Carbon 12 (6 protons, 6 neutrons, 6 electrons)
was the sign of the beast.
We had been looking for a conspiracy,
a gov’t plot
to implant microchips in us,
or tattoo bar codes on our hands.
Yet, there it was,
implanted in every cell,
and stamped in every
double-helix tattoo.
Evil was in our genes
a monster
in the labyrinth
of each fingertip,
waiting.
… without pretension since 1995.

Thanks, Cheryl. I like the irony. And it’s an eschatological twist. We’re always looking for the beast somewhere out there. But the beast is anywhere the cross doesn’t rule in us. I appreciate you reading 🙂
Technically it is 6+60+600.
Regardless, it is similar to Irenaues’ approach:
6 = man’s number
60 = man’s measure
600 = man’s time of apostasy ready for judgment
The 6+60 comes from the measure of Nebuchadnezzar’s handcrafted idol of himself. He is a man (6) making himself the full measure (60). Babylonian math was based on a system of 60s. Our math is based on 10s.
The 600 comes from the age of Noah when the world was judged.
That’s Irenaues’ interpretation in brief.
As a side note, I have this observation: In a sense Noah was taken away and the others left just as Matthew 24: 37-41 says.
Yeah, I view this poem as more theological tongue in cheek than anything. I like what you’re saying about Matthew 24:37-41. It could also be seen as Adam & Christ, perhaps (just talking off the top of my head). Thanks for taking time to share!
